  2015年6月6日美国SAT写作机经:

It listening better than speaking in order to persuade someone?

这次sat考题整体难度不大,但是很多学生看到考题仍然觉得无从下手。难的并不是题目本身,而是因为题目脱离了大家最为熟悉的“用某一个人做主语讲一个故事”就可以搞定一切的的模式。不管是香港的考题 “Do people have to spend less time with others to appreciatethem?”, 还是本次美国东部的考题“It listeningbetter than speaking in order to persuade someone?”,乍一眼看过去的感觉都是要写两个人-A因为花时间陪伴了B,改变了appreciation;或者是A 成功用speaking /listening的方式说服了B.

而这个题目,从话题分类的角度思考,可以想到挑权,挑权者简单粗暴地提出自己的persuasion without even listening because all their suggestion comefrom first-hand experience;从说理的角度出发,最容易想到的是listening granteesthe efficiency of perpetuation, while without listening, the efforts involvedin persuading others may be in vain.

  【范文】

Convincing people that our way is the best is never easy because persuasion is all about understanding. We are more apt to convince people who trust us, thus to listen and understand the needs of our clients or friends, whether is it psychological or psychical, is the sure fire method for an effective persuasion. Therefore, it is better to listen instead of just speaking in order to persuade someone.

Persuasion is not about forcing someone to do something that is not in their own interest. A thorough listening to how they think, why they make such choices, therefore, is a necessity before we intend to persuade. Without listening to the inner needs of the person we want to persuade, we won’t be able to give pragmatic suggestions, nor would our persuasion turn out to be effective, as is the case of Florence Nightingale. Born in a upper class, well-connected British family, Nightingale was expected to inherit the nobility of her family, by marrying a decent man and be a housewife and mother. This sort of sweeping generalization of the entrenched social codefor affluent young English lady at her time was also the value of Nightingale’s patents, despite the fact that Nightingaletreated serving others and becoming a nurse her life-long pursuit. Standing ontheir own point, Nightingale’s parents strictly opposed to Nightingale dreamand persuaded her to give up. However, Nightingale’s declaration to enter thefield of nursing in 1844 epitomized the failure of her parents persuasion, which fails to take into consideration of a real listening and understanding ofhow a modernized woman thought. There is nothing wrong in Nightingale’sparents, after all, they are doing that out of love. But however experienced orprofessional parents are, their way of thinking things is still different fromus. So that listening to how we think and why we think so provides the fundamental understanding that parents need in order to effectively persuade.

Despite the benefits of listening ,there are caseswhen merely speaking worked perfectly well in persuading others. Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream” had attracted the attention of more than 250 thousand people and deeply convinced them of his belief that all men were created equal. By merely speaking out how he believed, Martin Luther King successfully persuaded the 250 audience to support him. This fact seems to speak for the position that speaking is better than listening in persuading others. But just imagine, how many people were coming for Martin Luther King in that summer on 1963? -None . All these people showed up there were coming for themselves, because they believed what Martin Luther King believe. If the speech was titled “ i have a plan” with merely speaking out King’s own thinking, would that be so persuasive? I believe not. To put it another way, “I have a Dream” was just an accumulation of all Martin Luther King’s listening to how his peers or even “enemies” thought about racial segregation and how they made such conclusion. What Martin Luther King did was just put what he listened and how he thought together and figured out the most persuasive elements in his speech. Even in this situation when speaking seemed to worked well in persuasion, listening is still what makes the persuasion tenable.

All in all, no matter how advanced or experienced wea re , when it comes to persuading others, a thorough listening is what guarantees the final success.
